Michael Hillegas (1729 – 1804) served as the nation’s first treasurer.  His portrait appears on ten dollar gold notes issued from 1907 through 1922.  During more than 14 years in office, Hillegas performed the duties of treasurer and controller, and oversaw the establishment of the U.S. Mint as paymaster.  In August 1776, the Continental Congress appointed him the sole Treasurer of the United Colonies.  The United Colonies became the United States on September 9, 1776.  Hillegas remained in this position until September 11, 1789, when congress created the Treasury Department and Alexander Hamilton became the Secretary of the Treasury.

Benjamin Franklin  (1706 – 1790) was one of the most extraordinary human beings the world has ever known. Born into the family of a Boston candle maker, Benjamin Franklin became the most famous American of his time. He helped found a new nation and defined the American character. He was a writer, inventor, diplomat, businessman, musician, scientist, humorist, civic leader, and international celebrity. Driven by a strong sense of civic duty, he involved himself in his community and his nation. Always mindful of the “greater good,” Franklin helped establish or improve institutions such as circulating libraries, public hospitals, mutual insurance companies, volunteer fire departments, agricultural colleges, and intellectual societies.
